Furst-McNess providing malting co-products to WI and MN markets

FREEPORT, IL, October 25, 2011—The Furst-McNess Company, headquartered in Freeport, Illinois, is beginning to provide malting feed products in the Wisconsin and Minnesota ag markets. The brewing industry continues to be an invaluable partner for the Furst-McNess Company and the livestock industry. Malting feed products are the residual created in the production of malt for the brewing industry. After the malt is sprouted, the sprouts are dried to remove water. The resulting product is “malt sprouts”, which has high feed value for farmers in their beef and dairy operations. Other products such as barley needles and barley chaff are also available from the malting process. Because of rising feed prices, malting co-products are a good value option for farmers looking for nutritional value from a non-corn product, yet it is not as expensive as other alternatives.

Malt sprouts are a moderate energy, protein feed that are also an excellent source of digestible fiber
creating a unique supplement to those livestock diets requiring less energy density. “The regional dairy and beef industry can greatly benefit from feeding nontraditional feedstuffs, especially with today’s high commodity prices,” says Bob Garvens, Director Agri-Group, Furst-McNess Company, “as they improve their profitability and provide improved livestock performance.

Furst-McNess is celebrating their 103rd year in business, supplying products to the American farmer since 1908. The company currently operates in the United States and Canada.
